At twenty-one, he found himself among a band of mercenaries hired by the Nornkar to ambush the carriage of an old man — Agnosti Lansmaier. Moved by the old man's defiance as he fought back with nothing but a cane, Loud turned against his own company on the spot. He never told Agnosti the truth of how he'd come to serve him — only one person ever learned it: Lonan Lansmaier.
